Acer bets big on Linux

The company is already heavily promoting Linux for its low cost ultra-portable netbook range out later this year, but senior staff have said that Acer will also push Linux on its laptops.

Asus laptops to offer ‘instant-on’ Linux

Written by Guy Dixon ; An ‘instant-on’ version of Linux from US-based firm DeviceVM will soon appear on Asus laptops alongside Windows Vista.
The Splashtop distro will be bundled on the Asus M70T, M50V, M51Vr and high-end F8Va/Vr notebooks this summer and on the manufacturer’s entire notebook range “in the future”.

Acer unveils Aspire One ‘netbook’

Written by Lain Thomson ; Acer has announced an ultra-mobile PC which it calls a ‘netbook’ rather than a laptop in an attempt to revive flagging sales in the computer market.
The Aspire One is a low cost computer designed to compete with the Asus Eee PC and the OLPC.
The sub-1Kg device runs Linux, and offers Wi-Fi and an 8GB solid state drive. It will be in the shops by 10 July.

Intel to sell to mobile market

Intel’s chief executive Paul Otellini has outlined plans for the chip maker to move into selling its products to the mobile phone market.
As mobile phones become more like PCs, Intel believes it can bring its expertise to bear in the sector.

The PC manufacturer made the official announcement after chief executive Michael Dell was seen brandishing a mini-laptop at this week’s All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, California.

Cmpetition in the ultra mobile PC space is heating up with the introduction of a $299 device from US custom computer manufacturer 3k Computers.
The RazorBook 400 Mini Notebook Ultra Mobile PC weighs just under 2lbs and includes a 7in LCD TFT display and a full-size keyboard.
3K is targeting the machine as a low-cost portable internet appliance for professionals and students, offering web browsing, Flash games and instant messaging.
